State of São Paulo

The State of São Paulo has the second largest economy in South America after Brazil. With close to 40 million people living in 645 municipalities and the largest industrial park in the country and an annual GDP of US$ 299 billion, over one-third Brazil's GDP, the State of São Paulo has established itself as the economic powerhouse of the Brazil. Investing in infrastructure to advance innovation and development across Latin America, the State of São Paulo serves as a nucleus for institutions of higher education and research, investments which support its decisive ascent in the global market.

 

Municipality of São Paulo

Located in the south east region of Brazil, São Paulo is the largest city in South America with close to 11 million inhabitants. Also home to the largest financial centre on the continent, the city accounts for 12% of the nation's wealth. Recent initiatives to foster the city's sustainable development include infrastructure projects such as new subway lines and bus corridors, as well as social policies such as implementing new schools and health centres in degraded areas.

 

Laboratory of Urban Planning of Metropolis (LUME), Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo (FAU/USP)

A public and free university with over 75,000 students, the University of São Paulo is the largest higher education and research institution in Brazil. Laboratory of Urban Planning of Metropolis (LUME) was established in 1999 as an urban research lab investigating the transformation and expansion of the metropolis. Its mission is to enhance the training of future architects by facilitating active engagement with urban topics and to encourage public private partnerships which enable the direct participation of the academic community in developing public policies aimed at the entire society.

 

Centre for the Study of Policy and Economics of the Public Sector (CEPESP), Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV)

The Getulio Vargas Foundation was founded in 1944 with the purpose to create a centre of excellence in education and research in Brazil and to modernize the public and private administration. The debate about development and economic planning in Brazil is among one of FGV's achievements. CEPESP was established in 2004 to focus on the public sector and integrate concepts and methods derived from the economic and political sciences.
